Who is Mary Jane?
A few years ago I read a book called "The Botany of Desire" by Michael Pollan. What fascinates me about this book is how Pollan manages to be so captivating by writing about four seemingly boring plants: tulips, apples, potatoes, and the subject of Here Now Dance Collective's next project, cannabis. Well, let's be honest, cannabis has never been a boring subject, and, it turns out, that as a focal point of study, marijuana can reveal some intriguing stories that move far beyond the obvious political and social discussions. As director of the Here Now Dance Collective, I am creating a contemporary dance performance that digs deep into our relationship with this fabled plant. With a diverse group of dancers, filmmaker Matt Barkin, and composer Jeff Stevenson, we are crafting a multi-disciplinary production that shows the audience a broad prism of images--something much more colorful than its green, marijuana-glazed surface.

Thoughts of the Day
MLK JR Thoughts of the Day:
1. The elephant in the room is still institutional prejudice and racism, until that is fully extinguished the “Dream” will not be realize.
2. Like MLK, Obama is just one man, one human, with feelings, a family, and faults. You would be wrong to think that by supporting him or believing in him like he is some sort of savior, you are somehow not racist or prejudice. You have to deal with that as an individual, not with a vote.
3. To celebrate MLK day without discussing the significance of Malcolm X like selling only half a painting.
4. until there is a complete overhaul of the educational system and a leveling of the economic (and not pacify practices like welfare or affirmative action) playing field, specifically in low income communities, the ideal of a “post-racial” America will never come to fruition.
5. The children are a future; teach them what is right, not what is convenient.
6. Educated, progressive minded people need to have more babies...yeah I said it
